Assignment Categories for 2012

January - Exceptional Drought
Everyone is aware that we are in the midst of one of the worst droughts in Texas history.  Your assignment is to document the effects of that drought within the State of  Texas, through an image that conveys the severity of the year it never rained.  In case you’re wondering, wildfires are one of the effects of drought, which makes them acceptable images for this assignment.

March - Macro in Black and White
Macro images are typically made as color images.  But what if they’re not?  The assignment for March is to document a tiny (or at least very small) subject and render it in black & white tones.  Monochrome (a.k.a. cyanotype, sepia, etc.) does not meet the assignment.

May - Texas Barbecue Joints
Barbecue joints seem to be more and more common.  Guess the word has gotten out about how great barbecue is.  If you love barbecue (and what carnivore doesn’t?), this should be the best assignment you could possibly hope for.  The assignment is to document a classic Texas barbecue joint (i.e. not a chain, such as Rudy’s or Bill Miller – not that the latter should be confused with barbecue, but I digress) and make us want to be there.  I already do.  Bon Appétit!  One last thing:  food may be visible in the image, but in this case, it’s all about the joint.

July - Stars and Stripes Forever
I know what you’re thinking; yeah, another seasonal assignment, and July 4th is already over.  It is, but it doesn’t have to be July 4th to take pictures of Old Glory.  Your assignment is to find and document the flag of our nation in an interesting and unusual manner.  It doesn’t have to be on a flagpole, by the way, but it does have to be an image that shows the flag or a representation of the flag.  You should, however, keep it respectful, though.

September - Flowering Plants in Black and White
Everyone likes flowers for their almost infinite variety of color.  However, there is more to flowers than their color.  Your assignment is to render a flower, or flowers, in glorious black & white and bring out their other features using only black & white tones (not monochrome – see March, 2012).

November - Texas Dance Halls
Once common in practically every community in Texas, regardless of size, dance halls are becoming more and more rare.  However, they’re still around.  Your assignment is to capture a Texas hall and preserve it for posterity.  Black & white or color?  It doesn’t matter.  Monochrome (see March, 2012) is also acceptable.  It can be an interior or an exterior shot.
